CONFERS AMBASSADORIAL STATUS ON BETHEL AMADI – EXPRESSES APPRECIATION TO
NIGERIA
The Pan African Parliament
(PAP) at the 5th day of the Sixth Ordinary Session of the Third Parliament
approved a motion conferring Ambassadorial status on its outgoing President,
His Excellency, Hon. Bethel Amadi.
Moving the motion which was
unanimously adopted after some amendments, its chief sponsor, Hon. Martin Bohue
of Cote D’Ivoire recalled the remarkable contributions of Hon. Amadi towards
the institutional development of PAP in his capacity as President. Continuing,
Hon. Bohue appreciated Hon. Bethel Amadi’s wisdom, humility, availability,
leadership and open mindedness as well as his quality as a negotiator and unifier.
Considering the urgent need for the signing and ratification of the Protocol to
the Constitutive Act of the African Union (AU) relating to the Pan African
Parliament as adopted at Malabo, Equatorial Guinea in June 2014, Hon. Bohue
therefore moved that PAP should designate Hon. Bethel Amadi as Ambassador of
the Pan African Parliament charged with the promotion, signing and ratification
of the Protocol as revised and further
moved that PAP should make available to the Ambassador, the necessary
resources required for the success of
his mission.
Seconding the motion, Hon.
Dr. Bala Saratou Boukari of Niger
Republic, noted that it is not easy to manage parliamentarians from 54
countries in Africa with different languages and background and then thanked the people of his constituency for electing
Hon. Amadi to their national parliament which then made it possible for Amadi
to be nominated to represent Nigeria at PAP, describing Hon. Amadi as Nigeria’s
gift to Africa.
Supporting the motion, Hon.
Eugene Parker of Liberia sought to amend the prayers of the motion by adding that
the House should name one of the Committee rooms in honour of Hon. Amadi and
that the House should write the Government
of Nigeria to express its appreciation to the Government and people of
Nigeria for releasing such a brilliant and illustrious son to serve the African
continent. This addition to the prayers of the motion was unanimously adopted.
Other parliamentarians who
contributed in support of the motion, noted that unlike the sit tight attitude
of most African leaders, Hon. Amadi has not sought to amend the Rules of the
House or the PAP Protocol to enable him to seek re-election.
